Mint to be

Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

All she wanted
was to find a place to stretch her bones
A place to lengthen her smiles
and spread her hair
A place where her legs could walk
without cutting and bruising
A place unchained
She was born out of ocean breath.
I reminded her;
‘Stop pouring so much of yourself
into hearts that have no room for themselves
Do not thin yourself
Be vast
You do not bring the ocean to a river’
Tapiwa Mugabe
It feels so amazing to be blogging again! The past few weeks have been packed full with school, doctors appointments, graduations, and new kittens, so I’m pretty excited to spend the next few weeks catching up on my blogging life, Europe planning, and interior decorating. Let the summertime shenanigans begin. I was so ecstatic when this Charlotte Russe skater skirt came in, because it matched perfectly with the cropped bustier I’ve been trying to match for months. Again, the pastels are back in action, guys. Skater skirts are essential to every girl’s closet, because it’s so easy to dress up or down, and you can literally put anything with them. I like the mint in particular, because, well it’s mint, but CR has so many colors to choose from! I paired it with my American Apparel color blocked crop, and some surprisingly comfy strappy nude heels from AMI Clubwear. Skater skirts are my summertime (actually anytime) staple. Bring on the sunshine!

Garden Grill Cafe

Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

I totally forgot to post this, but I went to the Garden Grill Cafe in Wichita, Kansas- and it was kind of perfect. The setting is in this building- the restaurant itself is a bit hidden, which makes it that much more of a hidden treasure. On the inside, the energy is great, the atmosphere is cozy and friendly- and the staff! Everyone there is so amazing. Seriously. The cook’s (I think) children were even there. It is vegan, but you wouldn’t know it simply by tasting their food for all you meat-eaters. We were brought out samples of a soup which was Mediterranean inspired, and it was seriously the best soup I’ve ever had, although my mother isn’t the best cook, so anything in comparison is wonderful. I ordered a fruit cocktail- it was so pretty! AND SO GOOD. I loved how they topped it with fresh mint. I ordered a special which was gluten free spaghetti with marinara “meat” sauce. It tasted just like normal spaghetti without the guilt! My friend ordered the gluten free macaroni and “cheese” which also tasted like traditional homemade mac and cheese. The broccoli was so unique. I I’m obsessed with it. Indulgence is fun. I ordered a gluten free cheese and olive pizza to go (not pictured)- MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. It came with their awesome fry potato thingies. I had no idea there was a vegan restaurant closer than Kansas City?! So excited I found it! We had plenty of leftovers as you can see. I can’t wait to go back!

Summertime Happiness

Saturday, May 17th, 2014

I’m feeling electric tonight, cruising down the coast goin’ ’bout 99.
Got my bad baby by my heavenly side, I know if I go, I’ll die happy tonight.

Oh, my God, I feel it in the air- telephone wires above are sizzling like a snare.
Honey, I’m on fire I feel it everywhere. Nothing scares me anymore.

HELLO, SUMMERTIME. I have missed you so. Time for traveling and music and smoothies, oh my.

This body con dress from Charlotte Russe is the perfect piece to kick off my first day of summer! This contrast is e v e r y  t h i n g. I don’t usually wear body con dresses, as I’m already fairly hippy, but the structure of this dress still gives that extra oomph if you’re looking for that Jessica Rabbit sultry look (which I’m obsessed with btw) paired with stacked bracelets and a thick double chained necklace, this look is to die for! Perfect for those spontaneous summer night outings with my best friend!

Modern Pops

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014

I love how all the constellations are named after Greek heroes
It reminds me that even though they’re immortal
they, too, have their vices.

So tonight I’m going to sit on the fire escape,
eating an apple.
I’m going to nickname the view Eden.

And I’m going to look at those tragic stars
with their pagan hearts full of mourning
And I’m going to say,
“What a fall, but what light.

What impossible light.”

First day of finals week! I hope everyone is still alive and kicking. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for  s u m m e r .  I was originally waiting until tomorrow to post this, but helllooooo, this dress from Charlotte Russe literally combines all of my favorite things- black and white prints, peplum, and bows! Such a sassy little number! I couldn’t wait to share it with you all. This modern geometric print was screaming for a pair of equally artistic wedges to compliment it- this beautiful chunky gold necklace is also from Charlotte Russe- and for a super modern vibe, I brushed on a fun bubblegum colored lipstick and added tons of liner, and a thick braid to top it off. This outfit makes me feel powerful. Like I’m in control of this week. Bows tend to have that affect on me.

Traveling Cupcake

Sunday, May 11th, 2014

I recently booked my plane tickets for solo-traveling Europe for a month and I’m absolutely petrified with fear and excitement and terror and have you seen the movie Taken? But I walked into our local coffee shop alone yesterday and tried to journal a bit and drink my soy latte but I couldn’t because people kept asking me why I was there alone and that one little instance just justified my whole entire trip. Anonymity is rare where I live. Sometimes shit gets old in your tiny midwest town and and you have to leave now otherwise you may never have the nerve to again. I would make a post featuring my mum for mother’s day, but unfortunately, she hates photos and the interweb- so instead, I will show off one of my favorite dresses to date! This is the ‘Traveling Cupcake Truck’ dress from ModCloth! How appropriate is the name of this cute little frock? That’s the goal of this trip- to look like a cupcake traveler rather than a muffin tourist. Fit and flare dresses are my go-to silhouette; it’s such a classic cut, and flattering on nearly every shape. (Not to mention ‘fit and flare’ is code for twirly) The removable strap on this dress in particular adds a bit of versatility as well as a vintage 50s edge. I wore this outfit out of town this week and received so many compliments! Nobody can hate a pink polka dotted twirly dress, I suppose. I would hate to take away from the essence of this lovely dress by over-accessorizing, so I simply paired it with my fav white pointed heels and a matching clutch. There are literally so many places I could see myself wearing this dress- brunch with my best friend, a dinner date, disney world. Youthful sophistication at its finest.

Pink Lace

Friday, May 9th, 2014

Sometimes you miss a lot of class and have to make up lots of tests the week before finals week and you survive on espresso shots and peanut butter but it’s okay because pink lace dresses and denim jackets from Deb are a thing. Nothing relaxes me on stressful days as much as dressing up does. What you’re wearing is like a horoscope of how your day is going to go. You’re in sweats? You already given up on today, sweetie. Dressing up makes me feel in control and ready to take charge! What helps motivate you to get through your end-of-the-year lists?! Let me know in the comments below! I’m this close to hiring someone to follow me around with gold stars.

Keep it Surreal

Thursday, May 8th, 2014

Your spoken words have Vibration.
Vibration is Energy.
Energy shifts mass.

Words have power.

Spread the Light.
Crazy Feather

It’s already Wednesday!! Wow I loved today. Gloomy overcasts=my favorite time to take photos. Everything always looks greener and brighter and spring-y-er. So far this week my decade long dance career ended, I received the best blog news ever, and I inherited a kitten. ALSO- I found this $3 button up and $5 purse at Rue 21. I love finding random cheap things. I have a thing for soft button ups. I feel like I should get a medal for jumping around in six-inch heels. Light-up sketchers make me run fast and Jeffrey Campbells make me hoppy. (That’s bunny language for happy)

Snippets of my story- Raw Peach Pie Shake

Monday, May 5th, 2014

“I need to be pretty and funny and smart but I need to have quiet opinions and make meaningful art but I want to be reckless and wild and untamed I don’t want only my tombstone remembering my name. I need to be patient and thoughtful and kind but nobody can be perfect without first losing their mind and I’m so scared because I’m full of this greed where I’d rather have what I want than be what I need.”
k.p.k
Okokokok so this lifestyle=abundance. The coolest thing about fruit, is that when it’s your main source of calories, you have to eat a lot. Our generation has been taught to deprive ourselves of the necessary nutrients we need to keep our bodies healthy and our minds sharp. With most diets and lifestyles the biggest concern is that you’re eating too much. Too many calories, too much fat, too many carbs- the list goes on; however, the biggest problem people face with this lifestyle, is that they aren’t eating enough calories. Honestly, I’m on a detox from hell right now, as my body is readjusting to this lifestyle. I’m tired and sore and my head hurts. This is my body flushing out all of the chemicals I can’t pronounce from processed foods and french fries. The food most people eat normally can be compared to drugs, hence the withdrawal symptoms. But in the next week, my energy levels will spike again, I’ll feel light on my feet, and my mind will be clear once again, and I cannot wait to have that feeling back. The best I’ve ever felt, was when my diet consisted of only fruits and vegetables. Carb up, baby. Simplify your diet. Eat one calorie foods instead of fifty calorie foods and your body will thank you. If you can’t eat a food in its purest form, why eat it at all? I feel so sorry for people who think fruit makes them fat. I’m in love with eating 2,000+ calories a day in fruit and losing fat rather than restricting calories to 500 or less in protein shakes and bars and gaining. Find what works for you and do it.

I saw this cute recipe on modcloths blog (which of course I can’t find now) and I noticed how easy it would be to turn raw! So I did! This is perfect for the nicer whether! It makes me think of Independence Day for some reason.
RAW PEACH PIE SHAKE
-2 well ripened bananas
-1 1/2 cups frozen peaches
-a few vanilla drops
-a dash of cinnamon
-a tiny bit of ginger
-1 Tb raw honey (or agave nectar)
-1-2 cups of unsweetened almond milk to blend

Festival Fashion Friday

Friday, May 2nd, 2014

I hope the
universe has my best interest in mind.
When I want something with my whole
being, and the universe withholds it from me,
I hope the universe thinks to herself: “Silly girl.
She thinks this is what she wants, but she
does not understand how it will hurt.”

-THEORIES ABOUT THE UNIVERSE by Blythe Baird

I feel like I haven’t posted in forever! I haven’t really been able to shoot lately because of this god awful wind. I’ve been out of town everyday this week dress shopping for all of the grad parties coming up in the next few weeks. It’s funny how I can shop for pure fun and come home with like ten dresses but the minute I have a reason to shop, I come home empty-handed. Oh, the pressure. But I’m absolutely love, love, loving my new little kimono from Charlotte Russe. You can’t beat pastels and florals on the same piece. I just styled it with a classic lace bustier, light-washed shorts, and cutout booties. Festival fashion, except actually Kansas. I’ll be overseas for most of the summer collabing with a few of my favorite bloggers, site-seeing, and most importantly, figuring myself out- what I want to do, where I want to be, who I want to be. What insane adventures are you going on this summer? I feel sorry for those who wait to travel. It’s unsettling to me when people have these long, elaborate plans. The universe doesn’t have an obligation to wake you up tomorrow, so why not do what you want now? Spend your money on experiences, not material objects. Xbox one or a plane ticket to Paris?

One Day Without Shoes

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

My fav pair of Toms have been through so much in the past four years. Rain, snow, and sunshine. I don’t have the heart to get rid of them because I still love them so. I don’t think I really need to explain what Toms are- Originally starting with shoes, this company started a one-for-one system, so when you bought a pair, they would give another pair to a child in need. It’s amazing how we take shoes for granted. It’s rainy and cold here in Kansas, and the grass and pine needles in my front yard stings. I can’t imagine what it would be like to go barefoot daily. Shoes protect us from cuts, disease, and infection. Also, the “no shirt, no shoes, no service” policy extends to most countries. Shoes are part of school uniforms, and when a child is provided with a pair, it is shown that attendance increases by 62%. Toms eventually moved on to eyewear- 285 million individuals are blind or visually impaired. But 80% of those cases can be corrected or prevented with general eye care. It blows my mind that so many of people are living with something as simple to reverse as cataracts (15 minute procedure) that is so readily available here in the US. So when you buy a cute pair of sunnies, someone in need gets the eye care, such as glasses, procedures, and medicines for infections. But Toms didn’t stop there. Now they sell coffee. GOOD coffee at that. It is estimated that 1.8 billion people are drinking unsafe water. That’s, what? 1 out of every 4 humans? When you buy coffee, they guarantee that you will be providing 140 liters of clean, safe water to a person in need.
Anyways, every year, there’s a day without shoes that Toms hosts worldwide, where obviously the idea is to not wear shoes. The whole point of this day, is to raise awareness and understanding. Regardless if you believe in the brand Toms or not, this is still a great day to spread statistics and hard facts. We are all the same. We are one. But some of us, out of pure happenstance, luck out and are placed somewhere with clean water and proper medicine. It’s not something any of us have done to deserve better lives, it just happens. So just remember to be kind in the ways that you know how. Be kind to those around you, be kind to the earth that sustains you, and be kind to yourself.
